Tango - The Language of Love

The Tango workshop with Graciela Gonzales, in Toronto, May 2010, presented and clarified some core Tango principles, many of which resonated with principles I had discovered through my work in theatre, life and leadership coaching.

Argentine Tango, which I took up with my husband in 2003, provides a rich forum for exploration and discovery. We wanted to spend more time together while learning something new that would bring us closer and possibly draw on some of the skills and insights we had developed through our work in theatre. So we ventured into Toronto's Tango scene, became regular attendees at Paradiso, Toronto’s longest-running Milonga and students of Regina Salman's Viva Tango Studio.

The Promise of Tango

Any learning process has its ups and downs, no matter what you pursue, yet there was something in Tango that kept us committed and going on a regular basis.

Whether it was the music, the embrace, exploring energy dynamics of the dance, learning and refining musicality and balance, developing muscles, confidence and ease that came with practice that kept us going, varied from week to week.

Zen and Tango

The amazing sense of oneness that can be experienced when the dance actually comes together, when the leader leads and the follower follows – both fully present and engaged "in the moment" - when you flow through the space, as one, balanced, connected and aware – one body, four legs attuned to the music, aware of yourself, each other and other tango dancers, is an experience of flow.

It is the paradox of Tango - the stillness in the movement and the movement in the stillness, inherent in the dance, that is so enticing.

Tango Principles

The principles of Tango, as taught by Tango maestra Graciela Gonzales, are the lessons of life and leadership:

  • To entrust yourself to another
  • To follow your feelings (not your thoughts)
  • To open to and receive the ground
  • To centre, connect with, activate and manage your energy from the inside out
  • To be fully present, aware and in contact with the ground throughout the dance.
Each one of these principles opens up to a rich body of knowledge, Tango teachings conveyed through specific exercises, integrated through practice and tested on the dance floor.

The role of the leader and follower in Tango are distinct, bringing the yin and the yang into an interconnected and dynamic whole.

Leadership and Tango

Understanding your role and appreciating the other’s, developing your skills, maintaining balance, intention and attitude is a question of technique and personal style in tango as it is in the workplace and life. Leadership, not unlike Tango, is a practice!

Tango - The Art of Conversation

Tango, at its best, perfects the art of conversation – listening and responding through the form of the dance.

The quality of the conversation depends on your connection, your awareness and sensitivity, your intention, attitude and your technique. All things that are readily transferable to life and can get better with practice and with the support of a professional coach. Learn more
