How You Define Success Affects the Outcome
What is common about success, measured by a nation, a municipality, a community and how you define it in your life? The definition for success and key performance indicators vary from one organizational level to the next. Some quality of life and key performance indicators are universal and some unique, dependent on the prevailing values and intentions. Can people and their organizations achieve their fullest potential without take control of those things in their lives which determine their well-being?. Coming up with key performance indicators is a process of personal values development.
What is Quality of Life?
Quality of Life, a relatively new idea, combines the effect of multiple factors assessed in relation to each other, that collectively contribute to the social, environmental and economic well-being of citizens. Quality of Life measurement is used to assess performance, develop plans and inform strategy, policies and actions, whether for nations, communities or individuals. Nationally, since 1996, the
Conference Board of Canada
measures Canada’s performance annually to determine the quality of life of Canadians compared with 16 other nations, and to assess the nation’s sustainability in six key areas: - Economy
- Health and Wellness
- Society
- Innovation
- Education and Skills
- Environment
The annual benchmarking exercise sheds light on what Canada can do to sustain the quality of life and identifies what should be avoided.
Contributing Factors
Also in 1996, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) acknowledged that the quality of life in any given municipality is influenced by interrelated factors including: - Affordable, appropriate housing
- Civic engagement
- Community and social infrastructure
- Education
- Employment
- The local economy
- The natural environment
- Personal and community health
- Personal financial security and personal safety.

The Quality of Life Research Unit,
Centre for Health Promotion, University of Toronto, 1997, defined Quality of Life as the degree to which an individual can enjoy the important possibilities of their lives based on three major areas: - Being, reflects “who the individual is” with physical, psychological and spiritual components
- Belonging, involves people’s relationship with their physical, social and community environments; and
- Becoming, involves the individual’s activities to achieve individual goals, hopes and aspirations.

Definition of Success
How you define your success and determine your quality of life is unique to you. To allow you to assess your status, performance and satisfaction, the performance indicators you choose to assess your quality of life need to be: - Clearly linked to your
goals
and objectives and
- Be action-oriented.
What feels right? Choose your indicators intuitively!
The criteria you use to select your indicators are specific to you, your situation and
your goals,
and are informed by: - Your personal preferences
- Values and beliefs
- Customs and practices and reflect your perception and your behaviour
The process of selecting your success indicators helps you clarify your direction. An increase in your Performance Index indicates improvements in the quality of your life in the particular area where improvements were assessed.
