Reflexology

Reflexology is a hands-on natural healing therapy that relaxes, balances and harmonizes the body through a systematic and customized pressure technique, applied to the feet or hands. Reflexology offers a wonderful way for people to feel better and gain a sense of health and well-being whether you are suffering from a health condition or want to enhance Self care.

Reflexology is a complementary healing modality that treats the whole person, and works well together with other medical and complementary therapies in the best interests of the client.

A pervading sense of inner calm and energy are common effects of a reflexology session.



How Reflexology Works

Your feet, home to 36 bones, 33 joints, 100 muscles and 5,000 nerve endings, are viewed in reflexology, as maps or mirrors of the body. Pain in one area reflects energy that is blocked in its corresponding reflex.

In everyday living, the body takes in and filters out toxins (pollution, additives, stress etc). They are eliminated through the skin, lungs, lymph, colon and kidneys. When the body’s ability to eliminate toxins is exceeded (through stress or exhaustion), toxins are stored in the system’s weakest part –the upper back, neck, hip, stomach (varying from person to person). As circulation diminishes through lack of exercise, mineral deposits may form at nerve endings in the hands or feet. Applying pressure and massaging specific points on the feet or hands breaks up the mineral deposits, helps the body relax, increases circulation and balances the glands producing a relaxing and healing effect on the whole person.

The deep pressure to the reflexes in the hands or feet helps the body eliminate the toxins released from the stored areas into the bloodstream and stimulates the energy meridians that pass through every organ, gland, and nerve to restore balance and improve health.

History

Research shows that some form of foot treatment was enjoyed in Europe, India and China as much as 5,000 years ago, with references found in the tomb of an Egyptian physician dating back to 2330 BC. Dr. William Fitzgerald developed what he called "Zone Therapy" in the USA which Eunice Ingham systematized and popularized as reflexology in the 1930's.

The Reflexology Session

Reflexology is conducted in a calm, centered state of mind either in silence or with background healing music. A footbath preceeds the reflexology session. The client relaxes, fully clothed with bare feet, on a massage table.

The feet and lower legs are gently massaged and the reflexology technique (amount of pressure) is set at the beginning of the session in consultation with the client. Tenderness or tension experienced during the session reflects congestion in the area and corresponding part of the body. Reflexology brings relief to a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. The number of sessions required will vary depending on the intention and health condition of the client. For a health problem, a series of up to 10 weekly sessions may be required to achieve desired results.

Once the body is rebalanced, the client may wish to have regular sessions to help maintain health and enhance wellness.Sessions are 45 - 60 minutes in length
