Leadership for Changing Times

Effective leadership is especially called for in times of rapid organizational change, a highly competitive marketplace or otherwise turbulent times that lead to high workplace stress and dysfunctional and unproductive work environments.

Assess the leadership in your workplace:

  • Information is shared openly in my department/organization

  • I have easy access to the people and information resources I need for my job

  • Workload is evenly distributed throughout the department

  • Everyone pitches in and pulls their own weight

  • When crisis hits, workers come together to find solutions

  • My department works well together, we have great team spirit

  • There is little or no gossip

  • We acknowledge and celebrate department successes together

What is Leadership

He is able who thinks he is able. The Buddha

Leadership is a role you choose, anyone can. How well you perform it is another question.

You either assume it of your own free will, motivated by an internal drive or inspired vision, or you accept it in response to an external situation – you may have leadership thrust upon you, or perhaps you'll rise to the occasion when challenged by a crisis.

In either case, whether you're a male leader or a female leader you will need to embrace your role and develop the qualities and skills required to be effective. Read more the special challenges facing women leaders.

26 centuries ago, Lao Tzu observed that A leader is best when people barely know he exists. When his work is done, they will say: we did it ourselves

What’s in the Balance?

Who will you lead if there’s no one who wants to follow?

To inspire or motivate others to higher levels of performance, you must first demonstrate that you can lead yourself.

Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.Dwight D. Eisenhower

Your role is to balance the forces of emotional and mental energy in yourself and in your teams. Balancing yourself, the requirements of the task, your relationship with your followers and their energy and commitment to the task, is the challenge.

Using emotions effectively to influence and persuade others is a required skill that reflects a high degree of emotional intelligence.

Sacred Trust

You are responsible and accountable to your followers for the projects, businesses and organizations you lead.

One measure of success is the quality of trust that is shared. Your performance impacts this sacred trust. Negative and positive impacts are reflected in your followers' behavior and productivity.

Your effectiveness in the moment depends on whether you can assume control of the situation - whether you're in a position of choice.

Culitvating Resilience

Developing the ability to adjust and modulate your unique blend of styles, traits and qualities to respond appropriately to the situation in the moment is something Beginners Mind can help you achieve.
