SMART Goals Move You Forward
Clarifying your goals and objectives puts you in the driver's seat of your life, personally and professionally. Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.Goethe
Value-based and Practical
Values-based action creates alignment and accountability and sets the guidelines as to HOW you will operate and
provide a framework for decision-making.
To invest 3 hours per week and 5% of my earnings in my community is an example of a value-based goal of one of our coaching clients. Investing in her community keeps her connected to place and time and allows her to give back and thank those who have supported her and her family, making a positive impact close to home.
To build a sound financial base with a sustainable income strategy by 2015 that will provide for the basics of a healthy lifestyle for me through retirement is practical of the same client. Her ability to achieve this goal is enhanced and supported by the actions she takes to achieve her value-based goal.
These two directions and her approach to realizing them are interwoven, one supporting the other, assisting her to achieve both.
From Dream to Plan
Nothing happens unless first a dream. Carl Sandburg It's all about SUCCESS - Select a dream
- Use your dream to set a goal
- Create a plan
- Consider resources
- Enhance skills and abilities
- Spend time wisely
- Start! Get organized and go.
…it’s one of those acro-whatevers, said Pooh**Roger E.Allen and Stephen D. Allen, Winnie-the-Pooh on Success (New York: Penguin, 1997) p 10. Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens. Carl Gustav Jung The pursuit of success moves you into a position of CHOICE, an empowering and effective strategy especially when you make your goals SMART. - S – specific
- M – measurable
- A – aligned to values
- R – realistic
- T – time based
The more specific you can be, the more attainable your dream of success. Giant goals produce giant
motivation.
Anthony Robbins
10 Steps to a SMART Goal that Sticks
Take a moment to centre yourself and prepare to dream: - Tune in – how do you feel?, Silence the Chatter – breathe deeply, connect to your deeper self
- Lifestyle Scan - assess your situation. What’s needed/wanting?
- Envision the future - what do you want in your life?...Does the vision spark energy/passion?
- Define Success – What’s it look like? Who’s still in the picture? How will you recognize it? Strive for a vision that'll make you "reach"
- Identify key milestones along the way.
- Do a personal SWOT analysis - identify your competencies and skills; leverage opportunities; protect yourself from weaknesses/threats
- Consider requirements (skills, resources); What supports are required?
- Assess impacts – what changes are easy to make?
- Restate the goal so it resonates with your values. Make it SMART!
- Evaluate - Double Check
How it Works
If you feel a sense of tug/a pull in your gut that gets you excited you’ve got a great one. This emotional pull can help sustain your commitment as you move into action and develop achievement motivation. Learn more about
the role emotions and feelings
play in your life and what they have to offer you. Don’t be afraid to take a big step. You can't cross a chasm in two small jumps. David Lloyd George
Consider The Impact
Double Check – Review your vision of success – do you really want to do it? Ask yourself:
- How will achieving this objective benefit me?
- What are some risks and what can I do to minimize them?
- What impact will this new initiative have on my life, my relationships and schedule?
- What can I let go of to make room for this new activity in my daily life?
- What milestones can I identify as markers along the way?
- What does success look like – how will I know I’ve arrived?
- Is it worth committing to?
- What can I commit to taking on this week?
- How will I hold myself accountable?
- How will I celebrate the first milestone I reach?
Let Passion Power Performance
If you still want to proceed, you’re now ready to develop the plan of action that breaks your objective into tasks you believe to be achievable...over time. Having a destination and a road map are the first steps toward success. You'll also need to ensure you have enough fuel (motivation, energy, support and renewal).
Taking time to check in with yourself a daily practice can help you maintain balance and integrity.
