Happy Earth Day - Festive Earth Day!

12 years ago today I incorporated Festive Earth Society, a non profit organization.

The inspiration for Festive Earth Society came from 20 some years of experience as an artist and executive in the cultural sector. I recognized:

  • arts experience and artists are powerful change agents
  • arts experience has deep healing and integrating potential
  • creativity as an active force of positive change accessible to all individuals

I believed then and still believe today, that celebration effects positive change - That which we love, we protect and we nurture.

I wanted to test this premise and effect positive change in my community. I wanted to make a difference!

Anniversaries are Special

Anniversaries invite you to stop and re-member:
  • What was then?
  • What is now?
  • What has changed?

What was Then?

My mission or “call to action” then was to bring artists and scientists together with the community to promote environmental awareness through action, information exchange and celebration…and we did!

The rallying cry then, as now, is, Reclaim, Restore and Celebrate

Together with thousands of participants (artists, scientists, arts and environmental-organizations, eco-entrepreneurs, government, private sector partners and the community), we helped people of all ages connect to:

  • Place - The Don River in Toronto, through annual eco-action, clean-up campaigns and arts in education initiatives
  • Their values - enabling them to learn about the impact their choices (as consumers and citizens) have on the environment by presenting subject-matter experts in Eco-Talks, disseminating Eco-Tips through media partners, and developing an on-line Eco-Info website
  • Each other and the joy of community by engaging artists and volunteers in community arts projects featured at the annual eco-festivals.

Celebration as Strategy

From 1998 to 2003, we produced:

  • 6 eco-festivals at Riverdale Park and the Toronto Brick Works
  • River of Light, Fall 1998
  • Festive Earth Spring Fair, 1999, 2000, 2001
  • Festive Earth Harvest Fair, 1999
  • The Living Rivers Festival at The Brick Works, May 2002
  • An Eco Trade Fair for eco-entrepreneurs
  • 4 Clean-up The Don Campaigns (linking and promoting the work of 12 Don River Stewardship Groups)
  • 2 Eco Talk Series with subject matter experts

Thousands of volunteers (artists, scientists and community members) contributed to making these initiatives successful and shared their time, talent and experience to effect change. Festive Earth initiatives built a community of eco-ambassadors for life. Festive Earth Artists

Results - Strength in Numbers

People, young and old, discovered the river as an inspiration, an oasis and a retreat in the centre of the city.

Organizations and eco-business owners reached out to each other and the public creating connections, sharing information and promoting responsive and responsible living.

What is Now?

The landscape has changed. The "greening" of the mainstream continues as the metaphorical "River of Light", (enlightened self interest)continues to flow through the hearts and minds of the people.

Through all the doing - all the activities designed to effect change, I came to realize that I had neglected myself and knew deep-down that to heal myself, I had to reclaim my energy, restore my health and celebrate myself...I knew that to truly honour my Self, I would be honouring the earth.

Coaching success principles suggest that “celebration as a strategy” works. By focusing on our strengths, by honouring ourselves and attending to what’s working well with one eye to continuous improvement we align our vision, values and action and continue to Be More and Do Better - at home in our skin and in the world we live in. Happy Festive Earth Day!

My call to action continues to be Reclaim, Restore and Celebrate. My focus now has shifted to help people be the change they want to see in their world.

As a coach, I help people connect with their creativity - the river of light that flows through their hearts and minds to accept and celebrate themselves, the earth that supports us and our collective interdependence. Together, as one, we are the result and expression of our continually evolving creativity.
